Eugenia Lake House was designed as an all-season retreat for a young family, ideal for skiing, hiking, and savoring the stunning lake views. Built with Passive House and sustainable design principles, this generational home emphasizes quality family time, extended stays, and a deep appreciation for the natural environment. The site consists of a main dwelling and a separate gym building, offering a dedicated space for wellness and recreation.
The client’s vision for Eugenia Lake House was to create a vacation home (less than a 2-hour drive from Toronto) where their family could gather, enjoy extended stays, and immerse themselves in the serenity and tranquility of the surrounding nature. The design promotes environmental stewardship, nurturing a deep connection with the natural landscape and the lake beyond.
The interior design features a playful undertone while embracing modern simplicity. Clean lines, minimalist lighting, and warm wood tones are complemented by pops of color that harmonize with the natural lake environment. The curved cedar ceiling appears monolithic, with trimless custom details seamlessly integrating lights and ventilation ducts, enhancing the home’s modern yet warm atmosphere.
A centerpiece kitchen overlooking the breathtaking waterfront was a key request from the client. The design needed to accommodate multiple cooks and pizza-making parties, resulting in a large worktop space. Custom pendant lighting above the island integrates seamlessly with the curved ceiling. The incorporation of a pizza oven, a client mandate, posed a challenge due to its size. However, the design team strategically positioned it near the dining area, allowing occupants to enjoy the cooking experience. Serving as a focal point, the pizza oven replaces the absence of a fireplace, aligning with Passive House priorities and featuring a thermally sealed door.
Throughout the home, the interior design blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating a harmonious connection with nature and the lake beyond.
