No project in the firm’s portfolio exemplifies SSD’s design philosophy better than this Toronto penthouse completed in 2019. Taking a cue from the clients’ love of travel and their growing collection of Asian antiquities and art, the design team has imbued this two-storey penthouse with a Japanese aesthetic of simplicity, modernism and an earth-toned palette. Every aspect of the penthouse is custom – from the kitchen, lighting, millwork and flooring, to the furniture and cabinet hardware. The result is a luxurious and tranquil retreat that fully satisfies the designer’s criteria for a successful project: a customized interior enhancing the clients living experience, delivered on time and on budget.
The best part of this project was working with the client who has a keen eye for design. The owners live in Toronto part-time. They wanted their penthouse to look and feel different from their southern home in the US. This design was truly a collaborative effort and although there were challenges, magic did happen! New possibilities emerged and took shape and our client is thrilled.
Although this penthouse is small, it is big on design. The design team has utilized all of the space available with high-end millwork and clever design details, such as concealed TVs, wine bars and sophisticated lighting systems. The luxury appliances and bath fixtures aid in providing our client with a northern tranquil northern retreat. The clean lines, earth tone palette and modern influences of Japanese design reminds our clients of their favorite travel destinations abroad.
The unique design of this penthouse fits beautifully into the wider environment. The penthouse has 360 degree views of downtown Toronto, featuring breathtaking views of the CN Tower and Lake Ontario. The open concept living space blends beautifully with the exterior patio and views of the cityscape.
